The assembled works, rarely more than 30 inches high, add female and black artists to the ranks, purposefully ignore the distinction between the first and second generation, and also blur the line between Abstract Expressionism and Color Field painting. The show is a valuable chance to contemplate the spread of an artistic style, and the ratio of originality and talent as well as diligence and ambition that makes an artist "canon worthy. Richard Pousette-Dart 's shimmering "Nebulus Garden" of 1945 and Janet Sobol's dripped-paint untitled work of 1946-48 could be seen as eroding, in the words of the press release, "the myth that the 'all-over' style of painting began with Pollock's work on Long Island" in the late '40s. To some extent the exhibition has the look of an aftermath, a trend in decline or maybe a Whitney Museum painting annual in the late '50s — minus the figurative painters. And yet the show also argues that Abstract Expressionism brought out the best in artists of all ages, some who embraced it for the rest of their lives and others who used it as a springboard to their mature work.

Mays feels that Michelle Obama will have a major influence at the White House and created a series on the incoming first lady, one of which is entitled No More Mammies in the White House. His 30-year career as a painter started at the age of 8, and he has undertaken several lengthy art residences in Mexico and Berkeley, CA, as well as at the prestigious, cutting-edge City of Arts in Paris.
