This voyage and the results of this scientific expedition would change humankinds understanding of themselves and the world, through the discovery of the theories of evolution and natural selection. However, had FitzRoy not selected Darwin, the latter would not have written his famous book, ‘‘Origins of Species,” and would have followed his chosen career as a country clergyman, who would pursue science as a hobby and not a profession. The HMS Beagle was specially fitted out for the expedition, and the British Admiralty selected FitzRoy, who was perhaps not only a worthy in the arts of seamanship, but in his own right would make advanced in the prediction of weather. Although most of the attention today, centers on Charles Darwin, Captain FitzRoy conducted extensive studies of the channels that comprise the Magellan Strait, and with this study would introduce the world to the societies and anthropology of the Fuegian tribes. FitzRoy’s work on weather gave the world the earliest depictions of cold and warm air masses on a map and provided humankind the first official storm warnings which would be issued in February 1861.
